Overseed Colorado bluegrass, ryegrass and tall fescue lawns from late summer into early fall, while soil is still near 60°F or warmer, so seedlings root before winter; once soil falls into the 40s, wait for spring or seed dormant. Today the 0–4 inch soil around Denver, CO averages 61°F and is warming.

Jonathan Green Black Beauty Rocky Mountain Colorado Grass Seed

Best for Front Range lawns

The one mix on this list its maker formulates specifically for Colorado and the other Rocky Mountain states, combining tall fescue for drought tolerance with Kentucky bluegrass and fast-starting perennial ryegrass.

Why we picked it

  • Jonathan Green says it's formulated for lawns in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming and for cool, semi-arid, high-altitude climates.
  • A mix of turf-type tall fescues, Blue Panther Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass; Jonathan Green rates it for heavy traffic and says it germinates in 10–14 days.
  • Sold in 3, 7, 25 and 50 lb bags; the 3 lb bag overseeds up to 1,500 sq ft and the 7 lb up to 3,500 sq ft.

Downsides

  • Jonathan Green says seed needs soil of at least 55°F to germinate, so in most years it's a late-August-to-September job on the Front Range, not a late-October one.
  • The product page doesn't list the percentage of each grass; check the seed tag if you're matching an all-bluegrass lawn.
  • Jonathan Green says to wait at least 30 days after a weed control before seeding.

Pennington Smart Seed Kentucky Bluegrass 3 lb. Grass Seed Blend (100543705)

Best for thickening a bluegrass lawn

If your lawn is already Kentucky bluegrass and you just want it thicker, a straight bluegrass blend keeps the look uniform, and a small bag goes a long way at the overseeding rate.

Why we picked it

  • A Kentucky bluegrass blend with a fertilizer seed coating; the 3 lb bag covers up to 2,000 sq ft overseeding or 1,000 sq ft for a new lawn.
  • Pennington's overseeding rate is 1.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft, planted 1/4 in deep, with a 3 in mowing height once established.
  • Pennington lists it for early spring or early fall planting and calls it guaranteed to grow.

Downsides

  • Results take 15–30 days (Pennington), slower than the mixes here, which fits Penn State's note that bluegrass germinates slowly; get it down early.
  • Pennington lists it for areas with 4–6 hours of sun.
  • Home Depot's spec table rates it low for drought and traffic tolerance, though Pennington's description calls it traffic resistant.

Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns (18022B)

Best for hot, sunny spots

For the south- and west-facing stretches that bake every July, Scotts pairs Kentucky bluegrass with tall fescue and rates this mix medium to high for drought resistance.

Why we picked it

  • Contains Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue; Scotts says it resists extreme heat and rates it medium to high for drought resistance and durability.
  • Designed for full sun and partial shade, for new lawns or overseeding in spring or fall (Scotts).
  • Root-Building Nutrition combines seed, fertilizer (4-0-0) and soil improver in one bag.

Downsides

  • Scotts says to apply when daily average soil is consistently 60–75°F, so it's a late-summer product in Colorado, not a late-fall one.
  • Coverage per bag is small: the 2.4 lb bag overseeds 600 sq ft (16 lb bag: 4,000 sq ft).
  • The seed is treated with mefenoxam; Scotts says not to use it for food, feed or oil and to store it away from feed.

Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard Mini Broadcast Spreader (76121B)

Best spreader for seeding a city lot

Seed spread by hand lands in clumps and gaps. A small broadcast spreader puts it down evenly, and its edge guard keeps seed out of beds and off the driveway.

Why we picked it

  • Scotts says a full hopper covers up to 5,000 sq ft of Scotts product, sized for small to medium lawns.
  • Ships fully assembled and pre-calibrated; the setting for each Scotts product is printed on the back of the bag.
  • EdgeGuard blocks the right side of the spread pattern along sidewalks, driveways and beds (Scotts).

Why fall beats spring in Colorado

Penn State Extension calls late summer the best time to seed cool-season lawns. Warm soil speeds germination, cooling air slows weed competition, and roots keep growing in fall: Penn State puts the best root growth at soil temperatures of 50–65°F. Seed planted in spring has to establish before Colorado's hot, dry summer and has to compete with crabgrass. Spring pre-emergents also stop grass seed.

Kentucky bluegrass, the backbone of most Front Range lawns, is slow to germinate. Penn State's germination table puts its optimum at 59–86°F. That's why getting seed down in late August or September matters: in October the soil may still be warm enough for perennial ryegrass or tall fescue but slow for bluegrass.

Soil temperature and cool-season seeding
0–4 in soilSeeding outlook
60°F and upGood: seed germinates and roots quickly (Penn State)
50–59°FLate: germination slows; roots still grow at 50–65°F (Penn State)
Low 40s, fallingDormant seeding: seed waits and sprouts in spring (UMass)

Set seed up to succeed

  • Core aerate first so seed lands in holes with soil contact. CSU calls core cultivation essential for Colorado lawns.
  • Mow a little shorter for the seeding, then go back to 2.5–3 inches, CSU's preferred height for Colorado grasses.
  • Keep the top inch moist with short, frequent watering until seedlings are up, then water deeper and less often.
  • Give new grass a fall feeding; see fall fertilizer in Colorado.
  • New lawns are most at risk in winter drought; plan on winter watering.

Missed the window?

UMass Extension describes dormant seeding: spreading seed when air temperatures stay below 50°F and soil is in the low 40s, so seed sits through winter and germinates in spring. It can work in Colorado if you can keep the seedbed from drying out in spring, and if you skip spring pre-emergent on those areas. Check your soil on the Denver page or your ZIP.

Questions

When is the best time to overseed in Colorado?

Late summer into early fall, while soil is still around 60°F or warmer. Penn State calls late summer the best seeding time for cool-season grass.

Is October too late to seed in Denver?

It depends on soil temperature. Fast grasses may still establish in early October in a warm year; bluegrass germinates slowly once soil falls below about 59°F.

Can I seed and apply crabgrass preventer in spring?

Most pre-emergents also stop grass seed. Read the label or seed in late summer instead.

What grass seed should I use in Colorado?

Match what you have: a Kentucky bluegrass blend to thicken a bluegrass lawn, or a tall fescue mix for drought tolerance. Jonathan Green's Black Beauty Rocky Mountain mix (tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass) is formulated for Colorado and the other Rocky Mountain states.

Bottom line

Seed Colorado lawns from late summer into early fall while soil is near 60°F or warmer (Penn State), aerate first, and keep the top inch moist until seedlings are up. A Rocky Mountain tall fescue mix suits most Front Range yards, a straight bluegrass blend keeps a bluegrass lawn uniform, and a small broadcast spreader puts seed down evenly. If soil is already in the 40s, wait for spring or seed dormant.
