How we count the season

Snow seasons run July 1 to June 30 so a single winter isn't split across two calendar years. We add up daily snowfall reports from the nearest long-record weather station with 1991–2020 normals and compare the running total with that station's normal for the same date. Normals come from NOAA's U.S. Climate Normals.

A normal isn't a forecast. It's the 30-year average accumulation by a date. Denver's snow comes in a few big, often wet storms, so the running total jumps rather than climbing smoothly, and being behind normal in early winter says little about the final total.

Why Denver's season is lopsided

Under Colorado's strong sun, snow on the ground often melts between storms, so the snow you see isn't a good guide to how much has fallen. That's why we track snowfall, the new snow from each storm, rather than depth. A single large storm can move the season from well behind normal to ahead of it.

Totals also vary a lot across the metro. Foothill suburbs and the Palmer Divide often outpace the airport, while areas downwind of the foothills can get less in westerly flow. Check your own ZIP for storm totals, for example Aurora, Boulder or ZIP 80013.

Using the number

Homeowners use season-to-date snow to judge how a seasonal snow contract is working out, and contractors use it to plan salt and labor. Our totals are informational estimates, not a certified measurement. If a contract depends on inches, it should name its measurement method; our snow contract guide covers the common types. For how official measurements are taken, see how snowfall is measured.
