Lake-effect snow forms when cold air crosses the relatively warm open water of Lake Erie or Lake Ontario, picks up heat and moisture, and dumps it in narrow bands downwind, so one Buffalo-area town can get feet while another a few miles away gets little. So far this season Buffalo, NY has about 0.0 inches against a 1991–2020 normal of 0.4 inches for the date.

Why we picked it
- Two-stage, 26 in clearing width and 20 in intake height, with a 252cc Toro OHV engine and electric start (Toro).

- Steel chute with one-hand Quick Stick control, LED headlights, hand warmers and a 3-year limited warranty.
Downsides
- Toro lists 12 in as its ideal snow depth, so in a long-lasting band clear partway through instead of waiting for the end.
- It's a gas engine: Toro recommends non-ethanol 87-octane or higher fuel less than 30 days old, plus stabilizer.
- Toro says capacity and throw distance vary with conditions.

Snow Joe Melt 50 lb Calcium Chloride Pellets (MELT50CCP)
Best for the cold after the band
Arctic air follows many lake-effect events. Calcium chloride keeps working to about -20°F pavement temperature (Minnesota Stormwater Manual), where rock salt has long since stalled.
Why we picked it
- Listed at 94.8% calcium chloride and 2.5% sodium chloride.
- Snow Joe rates it to -25°F and says it's formulated to last up to 24 hours.
- Pellets suit the Chapin walk-behind spreader below, which Chapin recommends for calcium chloride.
Downsides
- In its answer on the Home Depot listing, Snow Joe warns that too much can flake, scale, chip or crack concrete and says not to use it on concrete under a year old.
- The pellets pull moisture from the air, per the listing, so keep the bag closed.
- What it is
- Calcium chloride pellets (94.8%)
- Key spec
- Rated to -25°F; practical low about -20°F (MPCA)

Chapin 80 lb Residential Salt Spreader (8201A)
Best for long driveways
For a long drive or a corner lot, a walk-behind spreader puts deicer down thinly in one pass instead of by the handful, so you use less of it.
Why we picked it
- 80 lb poly hopper, 48 in spread width and 12 in pneumatic tires for icy, uneven ground (Home Depot listing).
- Chapin recommends it for calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride and halite; a spiked auger breaks up clumps.

How a lake-effect band forms
The National Weather Service describes lake-effect snow as cold air, often from Canada, moving across the open, relatively warm water of the Great Lakes. Warmth and moisture move into the lowest layer of the atmosphere; the air rises, and clouds grow into narrow bands that can produce 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour or more. NWS Albany notes the most intense single-band events east of Lakes Erie and Ontario have produced 6 to 7 inches per hour.
Wind direction decides who gets it. The NWS notes heavy snow can be falling in one place while the sun shines a mile or two away. A small wind shift can move a band from the Southtowns to the city or north toward the airport, which is why totals across Erie County can range from a dusting to several feet in one event.
When the season peaks
NWS Albany puts the rising chance of heavy lake-effect snow in New York at mid-November, slowly diminishing from mid-February through early March. The end of the season in western New York depends on ice: GLISA notes Lake Erie, being shallow, is the only Great Lake capable of freezing over completely, and as it does, its lake-effect events stop. Lake Ontario gets far less ice, so lake-effect potential lasts longer for central New York, including Syracuse and the Tug Hill region.
Tracking your own totals
Because bands are narrow, a single airport total doesn't describe the region. Our ZIP pages sample NOAA's gridded snowfall analysis at about 4 km, which picks up band structure better than one station. Check Buffalo, Hamburg, Orchard Park or your ZIP. For how official measurements are made, see how snowfall is measured; for plowing contracts, the snow contract guide.
Questions
What causes lake-effect snow in Buffalo?
Cold air crossing the relatively warm water of Lake Erie or Lake Ontario picks up heat and moisture, forming narrow bands of heavy snow downwind.
Why do some Buffalo suburbs get much more snow?
Lake-effect bands are narrow and steered by wind direction, so snowfall can change sharply over a few miles.
Does lake-effect snow stop when Lake Erie freezes?
Largely, yes. Ice cuts off the lake's supply of heat and moisture, and GLISA notes Lake Erie's lake-effect events cease as it freezes over. Lake Ontario rarely gets as much ice, so its season runs longer.
What ice melt works after a lake-effect cold snap?
Calcium chloride. The Minnesota Stormwater Manual puts its lowest practical pavement temperature at about -20°F, versus about 15°F for rock salt. Shovel or blow first and use deicer only on the thin layer left.
Bottom line
Lake-effect bands are narrow, fast and heavy, so the gear has to keep up mid-storm: a two-stage blower for the driveway, a sturdy shovel for steps and the plow ridge, and calcium chloride with a spreader for the cold that follows. Check your own ZIP for totals, since the next town over may have had a very different storm.
