Dormant seeding means spreading grass seed in late fall once air temperatures stay below 50°F and soil is in the low 40s, so the seed sits through winter without sprouting and germinates in spring, as UMass Extension describes. Today the 0–4 inch soil around Madison, WI averages 57°F and is warming.

Our picks

  • Best for sunny bluegrass lawns

Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Kentucky Bluegrass Mix (18036B)

1,600sq ft overseeded per 2.4 lb (Scotts)

If your lawn is already Kentucky bluegrass, a straight bluegrass mix keeps a dormant-seeded area looking like the rest of the yard once it comes up in spring.

  • Best mix for a thin, mixed lawn

Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra Grass Seed

    7–14days to germinate (Jonathan Green)

If the lawn is a mix or you want the fastest spring fill-in, the perennial ryegrass in this mix germinates in about 7 days once soil warms, per Jonathan Green, ahead of the bluegrass and tall fescue.

  • Best spreader for a whole big yard

EarthWay 40 lb Residential Broadcast Spreader (2600A-Plus)

    40 lbHopper (EarthWay)

Dormant seeding usually covers a whole thin lawn at once. A 40 lb hopper on pneumatic tires means fewer refills, and side-spread control keeps seed off beds and walks.

Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Kentucky Bluegrass Mix (18036B)

Best for sunny bluegrass lawns

If your lawn is already Kentucky bluegrass, a straight bluegrass mix keeps a dormant-seeded area looking like the rest of the yard once it comes up in spring.

Why we picked it

  • Contains Kentucky bluegrass, with Scotts' Root-Building Nutrition (seed, 4-0-0 fertilizer and soil improver).
  • The 2.4 lb bag overseeds 1,600 sq ft (530 sq ft new lawn); the 5.6 lb bag overseeds 3,730 sq ft.
  • Scotts says first sprouts appear in about 14–21 days with proper watering once conditions allow.

Downsides

  • Scotts' own planting window is spring or fall at a steady 60–80°F; dormant seeding is outside what the bag describes, so you're relying on the UMass method, not the label.
  • Scotts says it loves sun and points shady lawns to its Sun & Shade mix instead.
  • Scotts expects sprouts in about 14–21 days, slower than a mix with perennial ryegrass, which Jonathan Green says germinates in about 7.

Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra Grass Seed

Best mix for a thin, mixed lawn

If the lawn is a mix or you want the fastest spring fill-in, the perennial ryegrass in this mix germinates in about 7 days once soil warms, per Jonathan Green, ahead of the bluegrass and tall fescue.

Why we picked it

  • A mix of Black Beauty turf-type tall fescues, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass; Jonathan Green says the ryegrass germinates in about 7 days and acts as a nurse plant for the slower grasses.
  • Jonathan Green lists excellent heat and disease resistance and moderate traffic tolerance, for full sun to partial shade (6+ hours of sun).
  • Sold in 1, 3, 7, 25 and 50 lb bags; the 3 lb bag overseeds up to 1,200 sq ft and the 7 lb up to 2,800 sq ft.

Downsides

  • Jonathan Green's own windows are mid-August to mid-October and mid-March to mid-May; dormant seeding relies on the UMass method, not the bag.
  • It needs 6+ hours of sun a day (Jonathan Green); the company sells a separate dense-shade mix.
  • The product page doesn't list the percentage of each grass; check the seed tag.

How it works

The risk with late fall seeding is seed that germinates during a warm spell and then gets killed by cold. Dormant seeding avoids that by waiting until it's too cold for germination. UMass Extension describes the timing as when air temperatures stay below 50°F and soil is in the low 40s. Seed then lies in the soil over winter, and freezing and thawing help work it into the surface.

In spring, seed germinates as soon as soil warms, often earlier than you could have seeded by hand, getting ahead of summer heat. It isn't as reliable as late-summer seeding, which Penn State calls the best time, but it beats waiting until late spring.

When to do it where you are

Watch the soil trend. In the Upper Midwest, soil can drop into the low 40s by late October or November; along the coast it often takes longer. Open your city or ZIP page, for example Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis or Burlington, and look for soil holding in the low 40s and cooling.

  • Prepare the seedbed just as you would in late summer: good seed-to-soil contact matters.
  • Avoid seeding on frozen, snow-covered or sloped ground where seed can wash away.
  • Plan to keep seedlings moist in spring.
  • Skip spring crabgrass pre-emergent on dormant-seeded areas unless the label allows seeding.

Questions

When should I dormant seed my lawn?

When air temperatures stay below 50°F and soil is in the low 40s, per UMass Extension, so the seed won't germinate until spring.

Can I dormant seed on snow?

It's best done on bare soil with good seed-to-soil contact. Avoid slopes where meltwater can wash seed away.

Is dormant seeding as good as fall seeding?

Late summer seeding is more reliable, according to Penn State. Dormant seeding is a reasonable fallback if you missed that window.

Will the seed sprout during a warm spell?

That's the risk dormant seeding is timed to avoid. Jonathan Green says grass seed needs soil of at least 55°F to germinate, so seed spread once soil holds in the low 40s and keeps cooling should wait until spring.

Bottom line

Dormant seed once air stays below 50°F and soil holds in the low 40s (UMass), on bare soil with good seed-to-soil contact, not on frozen, snow-covered or sloped ground. Use a seed that matches your lawn, spread it evenly, and plan to keep seedlings moist in spring. Skip spring crabgrass pre-emergent on those areas unless the label allows seeding.
